ESL header

The focus of our ESL/AL work is on policy, teaching strategies, materials and resources for pupils from 5-16 years old within the framework of the National Curriculum. This area is sometimes described as language support, ethnic minority achievement, bilingual support by the school system. The target pupils are those from non-English speaking background whether immigrants, second generation, or refugees who require help with their English. Teachers in this field are faced with a very difficult task owing to lack of funding, limited time to work with the pupils and “political” pressures. We are committed to facilitating teachers in confirming and affirming their practice through impartial valid information and knowledge. The annual event normally takes place in November and has been going on since 1992. An ICT workshop is also offered as well as others in response to teachers’ requests.

blen has produced the first directory of electronic resources of ESL/AL teaching and learning (all Key Stages) – The Directory of ESL/AL Electronic Resources.

blen has also published the second edition of a survey of English language public examinations and university entrance – called The Language of Access.
